2018 Feb 17th Banana Boat Swim Series, Legend of the Lake swim, Rotorua

As part of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim series the Legend of the Lake swim was held on Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) on Saturday the 17th Feb 2018.

Courtney Phillips (18) one of Henry's senior squad members entered this swim as her first ever long distance event in the 3.5km swim.

There were 541 competitors entered in the event with Courtney entering the tougher  "Non Wetsuit" class of which there were only 80 competitors.

According to our relief coach Logan, wetsuits give you a lot more bouyancy so less resistance and faster times.

As it was her first swim she was entered in the second group of swimmers who started 45 seconds behind the first group.

She did not push herself and stayed out wide of the field for much of the race to avoid the traffic but by the first kilometer found she was overtaking a large portion of the first group.

She completed the swim in a time of 49 min 13 secs only 8 minutes behind the overall winner who posted a time of 41.16.

She said in hindsight she should have entered in the first group which would have pushed her harder and as she was only a minute behind the first female "non wetsuit" swimmer she might have taken gold. (They only give the first male and female "non wetsuit' a medal.
