TBSS Central City – Level 2 - Pentathlon Meet.
With sickness putting paid to Calvin and Oskars first foray at level 2 our team was down to 16 swimmers for this meet, still an excellent turn out.
Warm up was rather crowded but we still managed to get in warm up, turn practice and dives so I was expecting a fairly error free meet. This was sadly not the case with 8 DQ's across the team.
Although he only stayed for 2 races Jacob Ryan put in great swims to be 1st in his age group in both and qualify for L1 in the 200IM by 2.50 seconds. Great swimming Jacob!
Likewise Tianhao (Jerry) Mei also collected 2 1st and 3 3rd placings in his age group with some great swimming which also resulted in a 2nd place for the pentathlon and some prize money.
Our two youngest competitors (both 8), Paige Tevita-Williams and Alyssa Wangford were probably our most consistent swimmers on the day; Alyssa with 3 PB’s a 2nd and 3 4ths in age (10and under) and Paige: 4 PB,s (Including a whopping 32.89 sec in the 200IM), a 1st in age in the 100 fly and 4th in the 50 fly. Well done girls you can be really proud of your efforts.
Charles Adams (3PB’s), Kai Ng (3PB’s and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th in age), both swam well but marred their performances with DQ’s.
Poppy Cavanagh-Briggs, Tina Liang, Edith Li and Amos Yin all swam well with 2 good PB’s apiece.
Although he only got 1 small PB Elijah Yin did very well to score a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in his age in his 1st L2 meet; spoiled only by his 2 DQ’s. Big brother Amos also spoilt an otherwise creditable performance with a DQ in the backstroke leg of the 200IM.
Ivan Fateev showed steady progress with a 3.66 PB in his 100 free and good times in his other 3 races. Well done Ivan.
Andy Gong at his first L2 meet managed a good 3.60 PB for a 2nd in age in the 100 breast, along with 4th in the 100 back.
A solid performance from Alex Sit saw him end up with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 2 4th places (which earned him a 3rd place in the pentathlon), but only 1 PB, whilst Maria Wangford's 1st and 2nd in age and 1 PB was not quite good enough to make the L1 time she was hoping for.
Keep working on it Maria you're almost there.
Now on those DQ's!!! These mainly seemed to be a case of what you practice is what you end up doing in the race so swimmers take note and always aim for a better turn every time you turn in training.
DQ list:
Elijah: 200IM, 100 Breast: Non simultaneous touch of the hands at the turn/finish x 2
Amos: 200 IM: Left position on back and did not initiate turn
Charles: 200IM: swimmer did not touch the wall at finish while on back,
100 Breast: Hands not separated at the touch at turn.
Andy: 200IM (Fly leg): Arms not brought forward over the water.
Kai: 100 breast: Non simultaneous touch of the hands.
Poppy: 50 free: I have not seen the DQ form but I assume it was for starting before the start signal was given.
Despite the number of DQ's this was still a very good performance from our swimmers and I am sure all our coaches will be working to eliminate the errors before the next meet.
We have also received the Pentathlon points results and are pleased to announce Alex Sit came third overall in his agegroup so receives his professional payout of $15 and Jerry Mei came second overall in his age group and receives $20. Well done lads!
Lastly a big thanks to Pros and Jade Yin (fresh from their first up effort at the L3 the day before) and Yoko Wangford for their excellent job as team managers and our volunteer IOT's and timekeepers.
