A smaller number of Mount Wellington swimmers than usual (6) turned out for the Roskill club’s L3 meet on Saturday.
With the smaller number we were forced to press gang Antonia Soan into the Team Managers seat at her (and Poppy and Amelia’s) first meet. She took the challenge well and did an excellent job with the swimmers.
I don’t know what Poppy's mother had told her but it was not until she was waiting in marshaling, for her 1st race, that she asked me 'Is this a real race?'. The shock did not put her off and her 3rd, 4th and 6th in the 10 year old girls agegroup, along with 1 DQ, was a good effort for a first up swim.
Sister Amelia also swam well for a 4th and 6th in the 9 year olds and 2 Dqs.
It was just unfortunate for the girls that Roskill had chosen to ratify this meet, so times could be used for Swimming NZ events, and the usual leniency for 1st time swimmers was not available and indiscretions were enforced.
Albert put in a good swim in his first race for a 3.92 PB and 2nd in age. Despite not Pbing in his other races he finished with two 1sts and another 2nd in his age group.
Lillie Carter swam extremely well in only her second level 3 meet to take 1st place in age in all her races. A great 100m backstroke swim saw her only 0.21 of a second of the L2 qualifying time as well as being 0.69 off in the 100 free. This along with 2 Pbs in the races she had previous times for was a great effort. Well done Lillie.
Linda Liang also fell foul of the DQ enforcement in the 100 breast after a great swim for an unofficial PB of close to 10 seconds. She made up for it in the 50 fly with a great swim and a PB of 9.72 seconds.
This was after a member of the public decided she was entitled to jump into her lane and start swimming. When the lady refused to get out, despite pleas from staff and loud boos from the spectators, the problem was resolved by Linda and the other swimmer scheduled to use the lane were given their very own heat at the end of the meet.
Last on my list is Emilie Warren who swam very well to get 1st, 3rd and 4th in age and 2 excellent Pbs of 10.12 and 4.57 seconds. Again well done Emilie
Well done all of you but all level 3 swimmers take note that you really need to listen to the coach and pay attention to and keep working on perfecting those turns.
Once we have the official notification of the reasons for the DQs we will be working through them with the swimmers.
